Why Postpartum Support Matters More Than Birth Prep (And What’s the Twist?)
If you have $1,500 to spare in your perinatal budget, I’m going to say something that might make me a few enemies in the birth world: don’t spend it on a birth doula.
I know, I know. A birth doula sounds incredible. Having someone by your side during labor is fantastic, empowering, and super valuable. And if you can afford both, then absolutely do both. But if you have to choose between the two, choose postpartum support.
Here’s why.
You Can Learn About Birth for Free
You can learn about your body, the stages of labor, breathing techniques, and pain management options entirely for free online. There are thousands of resources available at no cost. Your partner can educate themselves on how to best support you. You can bring a friend or family member who has been through it before to provide consistency and emotional grounding.
Birth is one day. It is intense and important, yes, but it is finite.
Postpartum is forever. Because the way your postpartum plays out can set the stage for your entire journey as a mom. Whether your birth goes fabulously according to plan or turns into an emergency C-section, you will need postpartum support. Unless, of course, you’re one of the lucky ones who has a village of well-informed, trauma-aware, neuro-informed friends and family who have explicitly aligned with your values and needs, and who have the time and ability to actually show up for you.
But most of us don’t have that. Even when our mothers and sisters and partners are fully invested and supportive, most of them just don’t know what we need. Hell, most of us don’t even know what we need postpartum.
So most moms who know they need some kind of support after birth hire a postpartum doula.
What Is a Postpartum Doula Anyway?
A postpartum doula is a professional who comes to your home after your baby arrives to help you navigate the chaos. They are not medical providers; they are practical, empathetic supporters. Think of a postpartum doula as the extra pair of hands and eyes you desperately need while you heal and bond with your newborn.
Their help might look like this:
Light Meal Prep: Keeping you fueled so you have energy for nursing or bonding.
Household Help: Light cleaning and laundry so your home doesn’t devolve into total entropy.
Newborn Care Guidance: Helping you learn to cut baby’s nails, manage cradle cap, treat diaper rash, and master swaddling.
Breastfeeding Support: Hands-on troubleshooting and encouragement.
Emotional Grounding: Being a calm presence when you feel overwhelmed.
They bridge the gap between the hospital discharge and the reality of life at home.
The Twist: Neurodivergent-First Postpartum Care
So, what makes my approach different? What is the twist?
I am sort of a postpartum doula, but I am also a Perinatal Mental Health Consultant (PMH-C) and an ADHD Coach in Training.
Most postpartum doulas operate from a neurotypical perspective. They assume you can compartmentalize stress, that you’ll remember the instructions they gave you yesterday, and that “rest” means sleeping 8 hours straight. If you are ADHD, autistic, or generally neurodivergent, that assumption fails hard.
My twist is that I understand executive dysfunction. I know that sensory overload can make a crying baby feel like physical pain. I understand that the mental load of postpartum care can crash your brain faster than any illness. My support is designed specifically for moms whose brains work differently, ensuring that the help you receive actually lands and sticks.
