Postpartum Help in South Jersey: Why You Need More Than a Registry

You’ve done it all. You’ve taken the classes, read the books, followed the influencers, and hired the doula. You. Are. Ready. (for birth)

But when it comes to planning for postpartum, we kind of think, “I’ve got the registry, I’ve got the nursery, I love babies—I’m good.” And maybe you are. But for a lot of us, that’s not enough. Because if I’m being honest, you can’t really prepare for postpartum. It is a massive, disorienting transition that has most of us blindsided before we master breastfeeding.

Especially for us “older” 35+ moms in South Jersey. It hits like a brick to the head. When you’ve spent so many years worrying only about yourself, and that freedom is stripped away from you with the push of a button. In a blink, this baby human has fully exited your body and is now in your arms.

And from here on out, nothing other than loving, caring for, and protecting this baby from the world matters to you.

Most times, not even you.

You stop feeding yourself. You miss showers. You don’t take even a minute to yourself to recharge. You don’t sleep. You worry.

On top of that, you’ve lost any sense of control you had over your own life and movement. Your routines get smashed to pieces. Sensory input is coming at you from every angle—touch, crying, slurping sounds, noisy toys, stinky diapers—and the dynamics between you and your partner completely shift.

Division of Labor

I got married in 2007 and divorced in 2020. Just last week, my ex-husband and I were having a conversation about the past. I said, “You never woke up with them. Never. Not once.” And he looked at me straight-faced and confused and said, “Well, that’s how it was supposed to be, right? I went to work, and you did everything else. That’s how it works.”

I was literally shocked. Even after all these years, and a divorce, he genuinely believed believes that was the natural order of things. Meanwhile, I’d been carrying waves of anger, resentment, and exhaustion for years, doing everything while he assumed that was just the way it was, and I assumed he knew better. We never had a single conversation about it. We just let the default 1950s dynamic take over, and it destroyed us.

If you’re an expectant mom in Cherry Hill or anywhere in South Jersey, it’s so important that you comprehensively plan for postpartum. And I don’t just mean stock up on diapers and take a baby care class. I mean you need a plan. An action plan.

Because it’s obvious that whatever we’re currently doing isn’t working. One out of every five moms gets hit with a perinatal mental health disorder (PMHD)—whether that’s postpartum depression, anxiety, rage, or even psychosis.

A PMHD doesn’t just affect your mood. It affects your relationship with your partner. It changes how you interact with your pets. It impacts your finances. Your baby’s development, your friendships, your family, and literally every aspect of your life are affected by PMHDs. It may be common, but it doesn’t have to be. Moms in our community need more information and more accessible support services.

The way things are now, the most common response I get when I ask pregnant moms locally if they feel ready is, “As ready as I can be, I guess.” Postpartum shouldn’t be a matter of crossing your fingers and hoping for the best. It should be the time in your life when you feel most confident and most supported.

So where do you start?

First, sit down and have the hard conversations. Talk to your partner about who is doing what before the baby arrives, not after you’re sleep-deprived and running on fumes. Second, set up your home so it works for the way your brain functions. If you are neurodivergent, you are up to seven times more likely to experience a PMHD than a neurotypical mom. That means you have to intentionally look at your emotional regulation, your sensory environment, and your executive function needs before the stress of a newborn hits.

I don’t want you trying to figure this all out alone. I want to help you have an empowering postpartum experience.

That’s why I created the Postpartum Transition Package. Serving Cherry Hill, NJ, and the surrounding South Jersey area, it’s a comprehensive support system designed specifically for the third and fourth trimesters, built to help you navigate this transition with intention instead of panic.
