The Meconium Lie That's Making Your “Care Provider” Look Like an Apathetic A$$hole.
I’m super glad I don’t track this shit because I would be even more enraged than I already am. And I don’t plan to be at all kind here. So buckle up for some bad words and rage.
Because no matter what I do or how hard I try to inform my clients, this shit has happens over and over again and I’m really getting to the end of my rope about it. Seriously. I want to roll heads.
Here’s the scenario I’m currently raging about: some uninformed doctor or nurse who doesn’t actually give a fuck about you decided they knew better than you about what to do with YOUR body. AGAIN.
Because meconium. Cue the eye roll middle finger and lots of curse words. Hard.
Because guess what: They're full of shit. Completely. Utterly. 100% wrong.
And what’s worse is that they don't even BOTHER to TRY to be right.
meconium isn’t dangerous
First: MECONIUM IS NOT A CONTRAINDICATION FOR ENCAPSULATION. This isn't debatable. It's not a "maybe." It's not "probably safe." It's SAFE.
But wait, Tiff, what even IS meconium? It's the baby's first poop, isn’t it? I wouldn’t want to consume poop, would I?
No. Of course you wouldn’t. But meconium is STERILE while your baby is still in the womb. The only bacteria in it is YOUR bacteria. It’s not some random stranger's poop bacteria. That’s a big difference.
But it’s not everything.
Hospital staff apparently skipped Microbiology 101 because what they don't seem to understand (or even bother to try to find out) is that professional encapsulators STEAM the placenta until it reaches an internal temperature of 160°F. And then it’s dehydrated at 165°F for 12 hours. Bacteria can't survive above 131°F. So any bacteria in meconium is completely neutralized.
Beyond that, before we even steam the placenta, we strip the placenta of its membranes, which means we’re getting rid of the part that even came into contact with the meconium. And even beyond that, we do an extra rinse with rice vinegar before steaming.
But hey, why let facts get in the way of a good power trip, right?
The Professional Standards That Make Hospitals Look Like Amateurs
Real placenta encapsulators are trained. We know what we’re doing. We don't panic over meconium because we actually understand the facts. We’ve spent a minute learning about placentas and food safety. And we fucking CARE about the people we work with. Unlike some people. (Cough cough piece of shit doctors and nurses who come to work with judgement and lack of care or curiosity.)
Meconium is sterile in utero
The encapsulation process kills any potential pathogens through proper heating
Professional cleaning protocols remove meconium completely
This is literally their job - they don't need hospitals to "protect" them from their own expertise
Meconium does not contain the fecal bacteria that normal stool does and therefore is perfectly fine to encapsulate. I’ve encapsulated hundreds of mec stained placentas. It’s a non-fucking-issue.
Translation for hospital staff: STOP LYING TO WOMEN ABOUT THEIR BODIES.
What Hospitals Are REALLY Doing: It's Not About Safety
Let's be honest here. This has NOTHING to do with safety. If it did, “care providers” would:
Research the practices they're dismissing
Respect women's informed choices about their own bodies
Follow the law instead of making up rules as they go
But nah. They’d rather play god.
What this IS about is:
Control issues (classic white coat behavior)
Institutional arrogance (we know better than you, silly girl)
Ignorance (can't be bothered to learn anything new, especially if it’s something a “patient” brought to their attention)
Power trips (we have the power, you don't)
Well here’s a fucking newsflash to all of you L&D docs and nurses: Women are done with this bullshit. We're not your children. We don't need your "protection" from our own choices.
The Legal Reality: They're Committing Theft
And what really gets my hair up: It is illegal in all 50 states to prevent a parent from bringing home their placenta.
When a hospital disposes of your placenta because of meconium, we call that THEFT. Plain and simple. They're stealing your property. Violating your rights. And getting away with it because most women don't know any better, and if they do, they feel intimidated to speak up.
And seriously, no one should have to be arguing with a doctor or a nurse just after they’ve given birth. This is just more evidence that the systems we are forced to give birth under do not have our best interests at heart. They literally do not care about you.
And remember, this is more than unethical - it's illegal. But hospitals keep doing it. Because who's going to stop them? You? A vulnerable new mom who just gave birth? Yeah, that's fair.
The Impact: They're Robbing You of Healing
Placenta encapsulation isn't just some "trendy" thing women do for shits and giggles. For many of us, especially neurodivergent folks like me (autistic + ADHD here!), it's about:
Actual physical recovery from birth trauma
Hormonal balance that doesn't send us into a tailspin
Energy levels so we can actually function as parents
Mental health support when we're most vulnerable
And let’s face it, society doesn’t do shit to support us, so we’re forced to support ourselves. And instead of supporting us as we do so, the childbirth industrial complex tries to stop us at nearly every step of the way.
When hospitals steal our placentas, they're not just "disposing of medical waste" - they're stealing our potential healing. They're taking away a choice that could make a real difference in how we recover.
The Neurodivergent Perspective: This Hits Different
As an autistic/ADHD person, this bullshit hits different. We already know what it's like to have:
Our expertise dismissed ("you're overthinking it")
Our choices questioned ("are you sure that's safe?")
Our autonomy violated ("we know what's best for you")
Hospitals pulling this meconium BS is just another example of neurotypical institutions thinking they know better than we do about our own bodies and needs.
They fucking don't.
For those of us who thrive on facts, logic, and actual research, having some hospital worker make shit up about our bodies feels incredibly violating.
What You Can Actually Do: Stop Taking Their Bullshit
Parents, listen up: You have rights. USE THEM.
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: "It is illegal in all 50 states to prevent a parent from bringing home their placenta." MEMORIZE THIS. TELL THEM THIS.
DOCUMENT EVERYTHING: If they try to pull this shit, get names, times, dates. Write it down. Take notes.
REFUSE TO BACK DOWN: "Because we said so" is not a valid medical reason. DEMAND actual evidence.
BRING A COOLER: Have it ready. Have it labeled. Don't let their incompetence ruin your healing.
CONSULT A LAWYER: If they steal your placenta, that's theft. You have legal recourse.
Birth workers, your turn:
EDUCATE YOUR CLIENTS: Make sure they know their rights BEFORE they go to the hospital.
DOCUMENT VIOLATIONS: Keep records of which hospitals pull this crap.
CALL THEM OUT: Don't let hospitals get away with misinformation.
ADVOCATE FOR CHANGE: Push for hospital policies that respect maternal autonomy.
The Bottom Line: Hospitals Need to Get Over Themselves
This meconium bullshit is dangerous. It's harmful. It's based on complete ignorance. And it needs to stop yesterday.
Hospitals that use meconium as an excuse to dispose of placentas are:
Violating federal law
Committing theft
Denying women healthcare choices
Operating on misinformation
Abusing their power
This isn't just about placenta encapsulation. It's about bodily autonomy. It's about informed consent. It's about respecting women as autonomous human beings who get to make decisions about their own bodies.
When hospitals get away with this, where does it end? What other aspects of maternal healthcare will they decide to control based on ignorance rather than science?
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
Women are done being treated like children. We're done having our choices dismissed. We're done having our bodies controlled by institutions that can't be bothered to do basic research.
The time for silence is over. The time for action is NOW.
This blog post is for every mother who's had her rights violated. For every birth worker who's had to clean up hospital messes. For every neurodivergent person who's tired of being told we don't know what's best for our own bodies.
We deserve better. And we're not taking their bullshit anymore.
